VANCOUVER - Headline Gallery, a next-generation nomadic art gallery, is set to launch in Vancouver's South Granville Art District. Founded by Curator Misa Yamaoka , the gallery's first exhibition, Authentic Self: A New Equilibrium, will open to the public Saturday, July 3rd. Featuring an impressive set of female artists, the space envelops audiences, allowing viewers to interact with installations, and experience the textural qualities of the pieces - a much-needed change after interacting through screens for so long.
Says Yamaoka, "The art market is fascinating, but it has become so far removed from the everyday. Powerful work draws you in, tells a story, and can connect seemingly distant communities. My goal is to help build those connections while diversifying Vancouver's art market, creating a meaningful commercial space that acts as a platform for emerging voices and mid-career artists in our community. Headline is dedicated to curating thoughtful
exhibitions that take on educational agendas, showing that Art is a valid and relevant mode of learning and reflection."
Colouring the gallery walls is work by rising photographer, and environmental activist Desiree Patterson, who connects estheticism with scientific data to speak out on climate change. Also featured is work by Tristesse Seeliger, founder of Artist Talk, a video series born out of the pandemic that has made art education more accessible for Vancouverites during social distancing restrictions. Spectacular tree ring paintings by Lyssa Kayra will shock viewers when they first enter the gallery. Kayra, is the co-founder of Paintillio, a paint by numbers community mural organization that will be partnering with Squamish Nation artist Aaron Nelson- Moody/Tawx'sin Yexwull and the Squamish Arts Council to create a large-scale community mural this coming August.
The exhibit also underscores how women are championing the intersection of art and tech: Gracelee Lawrence maximizes fruit and body forms through Silk polylactic acid 3D printing, and Monique Motut-Firth scans thousands of images to create whimsical botanic compositions. Adriele Au, Kaitlyn Herlehy, and Shamona Stokes, challenge traditional sculptural practices, contextualizing materials to explore internal dialogues of self. Headline will also be giving a platform to young voices within the community: Emily Carr Artists Camilla Gioradano, and Nicole Johnston draw on their Mexican and Squamish Nation heritages to show striking pieces that invite viewers to reflect on the intellectual and physical spaces they fill. Meanwhile, emerging photographer Olivia Solodko delivers large scale photographs that highlight the beauty of the everyday.
Alongside the gallery's physical space, Headline’s online presence will focus on curating high-quality artwork for an international set of collectors and help creatives gain exposure through its editorials. The aim, Yamaoka says, is to cultivate rich relationships between artists and art enthusiasts, and to help develop the next generation of novice and experienced collectors.
